Description:

19th Century Stevengraph Baseball Silk. Heartwarming piece of Americana pictures an early game in progress, as yellow-uniformed men on first and third execute a hit and run against their red-suited opponents. Well-dressed gentlemen and ladies fill the stands as American flags flutter in the wind. The small but impressive 2x6" piece is part of a series of sports-themed silks by the Stevengraph company, considered to be among the best woven silk manufacturers of the day. Originally the silk would have been mounted on a cardboard backing similar to a cabinet card, though that is absent here, with the silk presented in a turn of the century frame instead (7x11"). A small imperfection at the top edge turns into a 1.5" tear that does little to detract from overall eye appeal, and another small hole an inch to the left is similarly benign. A bit of light toning at the right end of the piece is barely noticeable. A fine piece that really captures the charm of the game's origins.
