Description
1913 Earl Yingling Game Worn Brooklyn Superbas/Dodgers Road Jersey. The most beautiful game worn jersey ever offered by Heritage Auctions? It's definitely a front-runner in that contest, and for pure rarity it's a tie between this astounding relic and its home white sibling offered in the preceding lot. The vertical application of the word "Brooklyn" on the deep blue button path simply screams Dead Ball Era, as does the stiff cadet collar and matching cuffs, complete with button holes for sleeve extensions (which are not present). It's an absolute dream piece for the advanced uniform collector, a jersey that rode the rails with Yingling, Stengel and Wheat, and that appeared in competition during the earliest years of Cincinnati's Redland Field and the venerable Polo Grounds of upper Manhattan.Like the home white example likewise presented within this Signature Auction, this jersey makes its hobby debut here, consigned to the event by the granddaughter of the left-handed pitcher whose 146.2 innings of work in 1913 was fifth in volume among all Brooklyn arms. And of that top five, Yingling's 2.58 earned run average ranked number one.
Only a light scattering of small moth holes, none large enough to distract, and a few small stains require a mention in a discussion of condition, a stunning state of preservation for a garment celebrating its centennial. Like the home representation, this road finds "Yingling" chain stitched in red directly into the jersey body at interior collar, beneath a small square "Spalding" label.
An exceedingly rare survivor of the gritty early days of the twentieth century game, this is arguably the most exciting find to hit the uniform collecting hobby in the past five years, if not longer. That's a point for debate. But don't try to kid yourself that you'll ever see another one of these again--you almost certainly won't. Letter of provenance from granddaughter of Earl Yingling. LOA from MEARS, A9. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
