Press Release - August 21, 2009

The Freedom Collection of rare baseball cards, valued in excess of $1 million, anchors October Heritage Sports Auction

Privately held baseball card collection features some of the biggest names in the history of the game, Oct. 1, in Dallas

Dallas, TX -- A private collector with a concentration in rare and pristine Hall of Fame baseball cards has chosen Heritage Auction Galleries’ Oct. 1 Signature® Sports Auction to present 40 of the rarest and most valuable specimens to the collecting hobby.

“It absolutely ranks among the finest private collections of high-end cards in the world,” said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions for Heritage Auction Galleries. “Only the most iconic names in baseball history are represented, and each of the 40 cards rate among the highest graded available.”

Estimated at more than $1.2 million for just the 40 cards, The Freedom Collection of Elite Baseball Trading Cards will provide the early fireworks to the event, leading off the auction, which features well in excess of 1,200 lots of rare and valuable trading cards and sports memorabilia. While the consignor of the Freedom Collection has chosen to preserve his anonymity, the legends pictured on the cards require no introduction. “Ty Cobb, ‘Shoeless Joe’ Jackson, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays are just a few of the names featured,” said Ivy, “and in each case, the player’s most important and/or valuable card is presented. It’s rare to have a single six-figure card in an entire auction, and there are several examples in this small but special collection.” "Sports fans around the world are going to want to participate in this event," Ivy said, "and I'd encourage everyone to visit our homepage at www.HA.com/Sports, where they'll see enlargeable, full-color images of each and every lot and they will have an opportunity to place bids online when the auction launches on Sept. 10."

The trading card portion of the auction will end on Thursday, Oct. 1 in an Extended Bidding format, each lot closing individually after 30 minutes of bidding inactivity following the 10 PM CT cut-off. The memorabilia will be sold Oct. 2 in a Live auction format beginning at 12 noon CT, with bidders able to participate in person, by telephone, or online at www.HA.com/Live.
