Sunday Internet Auction
HA.com/Sports is the place to be every Sunday night for collectors of fine sports memorabilia and trading cards.

Over 100 lots will close to initial bidding at 10:00 PM CT. On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding).

No other major sports memorabilia auction house provides its clientele this much bidding excitement. It's just another reason why Heritage is the World's Largest Collectibles Auctioneer.

Call or email today to discuss consigning your fine sport collectibles and trading cards to an upcoming Heritage auction.

Retired Postal Worker's Gene Kelly 'Singin' In The Rain;' Suit, Bought 'Off The Rack' In 1970 For $10, May Bring Thousands At Auction

The Gene Kelly Suit from Singin' in the Rain.
The grey wool suit that Gene Kelly wore in 1952 in the centerpiece number of the beloved MGM Hollywood musical "Singin' in the Rain" — arguably one of the most famous musical numbers in all film history — has surfaced after more than four decades, after being kept in a closet by retired Postal Service worker and memorabilia collector, Gerald Sola, of Northern California.

The suit will make its auction debut on Dec. 6 in Dallas as part of Heritage Auctions Entertainment & Music event and could bring more than $20,000 when it comes up on the block.

Sola, who has been collecting Hollywood memorabilia most of his life, was sorting a stack of mail in the post office one evening in 1970 and saw a flyer for the now legendary MGM Auction on the studio's back lot. He sent away his $5 for a catalog and, a month later, travelled down from Northern California to Los Angeles for the month-long event.

"I stayed with my aunt and uncle, who lived down there," said Sola, now 72 and retired. "I had the best time of my whole life. In fact, if there was one thing I could do over again from my life, it would be that, just because it was so much fun. It was like dying and going to heaven."

During the auction itself, thousands of costumes were sold in the range of $200 to $400, but there were still hundreds of thousands more costumes that then-MGM owner Kirk Kerkorian wanted sold to raise capital for a Las Vegas casino.

The company charged with running the auction decided to liquidate the inventory with a good old fashioned rack sale. It was during this end-period of the event that Sola, digging through those racks, came across a single-breasted suit of grey wool with multi-colored flecks, with a four-button front closure and a self-belt with a two-button closure. Inside, the label read: "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/Gene Kelly/No. 1546-8565."

The Gene Kelly Suit from Singin' in the Rain.
"I took it off the rack and looked at it," said Sola. "I noticed right away that there were water stains in the jacket. I knew right away what it was from so I bought it."

The price? $10.

Sola now stands to make get a return on that investment a few thousand times over. While he insists that he never bought anything but for the love of it — or he would have already sold the suit — it's still going to be the subject of many a collector's eye, not to mention bank accounts.

"I think this is such a wonderful and historically important costume," said Margaret Barrett, Director of Entertainment & Music Auctions at Heritage. "The scene where Gene Kelly wears this suit is instantly recognizable to people who may not have even seen this film — but they know the song and they know the image of 'Don Lockwood' spinning around a lamp post, in the pouring rain, while belting the song, 'Singin' in the Rain.' Now, 61 years later, looking at this suit, it brings back all those mind-blowing dance steps Gene Kelly did, soaking wet, no less, in one of the single greatest performances in Hollywood film. It's a treasure of Hollywood history and of our American popular culture."

Sola is ready to part with the suit after 43 years of safeguarding it and admiring it simply because he feels, like any true collector, that the time has come to let someone else take over stewardship of the piece.

"I'm 72," he said, "and I've had this stuff for a good many years. I feel like it's time now to pass it on to someone else who wants it and will take care of it."

The Personal Property Of Farrah Fawcett Featured In December Entertainment Auction At Heritage

A Farrah Fawcett 'People's Choice' Award, 1977.
A multiple-lot offering from The Personal Property of Farrah Fawcett, including scripts, awards, costumes and personal mementos from Farrah's storied career, will draw the eyes of collectors to Heritage Auctions' Dec. 6  Entertainment & Music Memorabilia Signature Auction.

"Although Farrah is known as a cultural icon, to me she was a down-home Texas girl who was amazingly generous, fiercely loyal, and unbelievably supportive of her family and friends," said Fawcett's nephew, Gregory S. Walls, who consigned the property to auction. "Even though she was always the biggest star in the room, she made you feel as though you were the most important person in the world.

Walls relates that the decision to auction some of Farrah's things came from the continued outpouring of love from her fans and admirers. "

"Since her passing four years ago, we've received many requests from fans all over the world, of various ages and generations, for something personal of hers," he said. "Farrah was always grateful for her legion of loyal fans, and this seemed the most natural way to give something back to them. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the foundation she created before her untimely death. The mission of the Farrah Fawcett Foundation is to provide funding for cutting edge cancer research, prevention and to help those struggling with cancer today."

A Farrah Fawcett Twice-Signed Passport, 1980.
Farrah Fawcett was indeed one of the great female superstars of the 1970s and 1980s, from her iconic red bathing suit poster — that famous bathing suit, by the way, was donated by Mr. Walls on the first anniversary of Farrah's passing to The Smithsonian, where it now resides — to her breakout role in "Charlie's Angels," she epitomized the '70s era.

Against conventional wisdom, Farrah went from poster girl to highly acclaimed actress by taking on challenging roles in films such as The Burning Bed, Extremities and Poor Little Rich Girl. Not only did these roles garner her multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, they also solidified her status as a highly respected actress of her time.

"Though Farrah Fawcett will forever be associated with the 1970s and that famous, famous hairdo of hers, she remains a beloved, respected, instantly recognizable Hollywood star just as much today," said Margaret Barrett, Director of Entertainment & Music Auctions at Heritage. "With the wide range of the material in the auction that Farrah herself owned, collectors of every level and type will find something of interest that was hers."
