The Stan Musial Collection To Be Offered In October

Stan The Man MusialThe family of Hall of Famer and St. Louis Cardinals great Stan "The Man" Musial have chosen Heritage Auctions to offer The Stan Musial Collection, more than 500 lots of never-before-offered milestone game-used treasures, correspondence and mementos from Musial's personal collection, as the centerpiece of our October Signature® catalog auction.

"Stan Musial was known as 'Baseball's Perfect Knight' for good reason," said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage. "His incredible talent and humility on the field influenced his beloved status off, which endures to this day. His legacy will be celebrated in this auction and the top collectors will finally have a chance to acquire some of the things that meant the most to him from his storied career."

Some of the Musial treasures that will be offered for the first time include, but are not limited to:

Milestone baseballs including Musial's 1,000th, 2000th and 3,200th hit baseballs; several rings including a 2004 St. Louis Cardinals National League Championship Ring presented to Musial; a 2006 St. Louis Cardinals World Series Ring presented to Musial and a 2011 St. Louis Cardinals World Series Ring presented to Musial./p>

Historic correspondence and autographs including: a Ty Cobb letter written to Musial on the subject of hitting; a Babe Ruth signed baseball personally given to Stan Musial as a minor leaguer; a Branch Rickey letter to Musial regarding his importance to baseball and many presidential items signed and personalized to Musial.

Important game-used gear will include Musial's 1945 Navy baseball uniform as well as St. Louis Cardinals game-used material.

Sam Snead's 1946 British Open Trophy Brings $262,900 In Our $4.4+ Million Sports Platinum Night Event

Snead's 1946 British Open Claret JugThe Sam Snead Collection, consigned to auction by the son of the golf legend, electrified the audience at Heritage's Aug. 1 Platinum Night Sports Auction from the first drop of the gavel, as Snead's 1946 British Open Claret Jug soared out of the gate with a $262,900 price realized to lead the $4.5+ million event.

The first section of The Snead Collection saw record-breaking prices that pushed the night's tally past $1.1M after just 14 lots of the 166 total lots offered in both the live auction and the non-floor session on Aug. 2.

"Our marketing department really came through for us with this collection," said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports at Heritage Auctions. "We knew that the key to great prices for the Snead Collection was to blanket the golf press with news of the sale, and we now know effective that campaign has been."

Snead's 1954 Masters Championship trophy
No fewer than four lots from the Snead Collection garnered six-figure results, the highest reserved for Snead's Claret Jug, as mentioned above. Snead's 1954 Masters Championship trophy trailed close behind at $191,200. Part Two of The Sam Snead Collection will appear in a specifically dedicated Sam Snead auction at Heritage on Nov. 22, 2013.

Challenging Snead for Platinum Night supremacy was a trio of game worn caps worn by the iconic Hall of Fame duo of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The Iron Horse's early 1930s Yankees model commanded a record $239,000, one of the highest prices ever paid for a baseball cap at auction.

Early 1930's Lou Gehrig Game Worn New York Yankees Cap
Caps worn by Babe Ruth on his famous 1927-28 barnstorming tour with Gehrig and during his final season as a player with the Boston Braves commanded $155,350 and $143,400, respectively, each a record for a Ruth cap without Yankees provenance.

Heritage posted its fourth six-figure result for a LeRoy Neiman original in as many years on Platinum Night, as a 1973 portrait of Babe Ruth soared to a dizzying $167,300 in fierce bidding.

An exceedingly rare collegiate uniform worn by a young Julius "Dr. J" Erving at the University of Massachusetts brought out the top basketball collectors in the hobby and lightened the wallet of the winning bidder to the tune of $86,638 after a lengthy bidding battle. Sparks flew again as hockey collectors competed for the jersey worn by Bob Nystrom as he netted the 1980 Stanley Cup-winning goal. The hammer fell at a price of $44,813.

Sunday Internet Auction Highlights

HA.com/Sports is the place to be every Sunday night for collectors of fine sports memorabilia and trading cards.

Over 100 lots will close to initial bidding at 10:00 PM CT. On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding).

No other major sports memorabilia auction house provides its clientele this much bidding excitement. It's just another reason why Heritage is the World's Largest Collectibles Auctioneer.

Call or email today to discuss consigning your fine sport collectibles and trading cards to an upcoming Heritage auction.

Frankenstein Poster Realizes $262,900 To Set World Record

Frankenstein (Universal, 1931). InsertDALLAS — An original 1931 poster for Frankenstein set a world record as the most valuable insert movie poster ever sold at auction when it realized $262,900 at Heritage Auctions July 27-28. The sale provided a monster payday for the collector who bought the 14 by 36 inch poster as a teenager for only a few dollars at a local antique store and later kept it in the closet for over 30 years. The Movie Posters Signature® Auction sold more than $1.86+ million in movie posters and related movie memorabilia.

"It was strong sale overall and people were out in numbers participating," said Grey Smith, Director of Movie Posters at Heritage. "We couldn't be happier for the consignor."

The poster was previously owned by Keith Johnson, of Ottawa, Ill. "I got it from an antique store in town in either 1968 or 1969, and I probably only paid $2 to $5 for it," said Johnson. Johnson's wife, Julie, said the framed Frankenstein poster "was kept in the closet for the 30-plus years we've been married. Every once in a while we would pour ourselves a glass of wine and go take a look at it. We always loved it, and thought it was very cool."

Fantasy adventure movie posters remain popular with collectors as a rare half sheet and partial pressbook for The Wizard of Oz, itself featuring promotional pieces and posters never before seen at auction, fetched $71,700. A massive six sheet movie poster from the 1938 Errol Flynn classic Robin Hood, spanning 81 inches square, realized $41,825. Posters on the film are highly desirable but few are rarer than a six sheet, which is the only example known to exist.

Three pre-war one sheet movie posters saw competitive bidding as a rare poster from Citizen Kane sold for $38,837, a poster for The Thin Man, brought $35,850, and one from the 1933 classic Gold Diggers of 1933, fetched for $31,070. A rare complete door panel set from the 1960 film Ocean's 11, each measuring 20 inches by 60 inches and featuring panels of main characters, realized $21,510.

Leading a selection of rare Three Stooges movie posters was a rare one sheet for the 1938 classic Mutts to You, which realized $26,680. A poster for Playing the Ponies, sold for $26,290, and a title lobby card for the short Hoi Polloi, sold for $10,157, as did a title lobby card for Stooges' Cash and Carry.
