High Grade Early Ruth Signed Baseball to Appear in October Auction

finest early Ruth single
Fresh off the record-breaking sale of a PSA Mint+ 9.5 Babe Ruth single-signed baseball, which realized a staggering $388,375 in Heritage's 2012 Platinum Auction, the World's Largest Collectibles Auctioneer has its sights set on another single-signed Sultan of Swat milestone. Coming up in our October 25-26 Signature Auction #7065, we will be offering, quite possibly, the finest "early" Ruth single on Earth.

Serious hobbyists recognize that the ultra-high grade examples that have been skyrocketing in the collecting market almost always date to his retirement years. It is widely known that Ruth dropped the quotation marks around "Babe" soon after his historic 1927 sixty home run season, properly concluding that the moniker was no longer simply a nickname but a brand name synonymous with baseball brilliance. Collectors therefore properly place a significant premium on the considerably less common early model, which may be as much as one hundred times rarer than the unpunctuated style.

From that thin early supply, none have surfaced that could compete with the aesthetics of this one, which properly garners a 9/10 autograph grade from the folks at PSA/DNA, and an 8/10 rating for the ball itself, presumably based mainly on the slightest hint of toning well clear of the ball's focus. Our catalog imagery should properly indicate that the ball presents effectively "as new" from any reasonable viewing distance.

This is not a baseball for the collector looking to check a box on a list, but rather for the uncompromising hobbyist who understands the appeal (and investment potential) of owning an unequivocal example of the market's fundamental building block. An estimate of $120,000+ has been placed on this hobby treasure. Bidding starts in early October at HA.com/Sports.

Sunday Internet Auction Highlights

HA.com/Sports is the place to be every Sunday night for collectors of fine sports memorabilia and trading cards.

Over 100 lots will close to initial bidding at 10 PM CT. On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding).

No other major sports memorabilia auction house provides its clientele this much bidding excitement. It's just another reason why Heritage is the World's Largest Collectibles Auctioneer.

Call or email today to discuss consigning your fine sport collectibles and trading cards to an upcoming Heritage auction.

From Fine Art To Furniture And Everything In Between, Our September Estate Auction Has It All

A pair of female African Elephant tusks with bronze mounts. From a pair of spectacular bronze-mounted elephant tusks to American, European, and Contemporary Art, sewn with a varied selection of fine furniture and decorative arts — including collections of ivory figures, earthenware steins, and meerschaum pipes — Heritage Auctions' 1400+ lot Estate Signature Auction, September 12-13, has been designed with every taste in mind.

"This is a wide ranging and thoughtfully assembled auction," said Ed Beardsley, Vice President at Heritage. "Included in the array we're also offering a world class collection of Tribal Artifacts that once belonged to Carl Akeley, the Father of Modern Taxidermy, and The Elton Hyder III Collection, which formerly decorated the University of Texas School of Law Library."

A pair of French Jacod Feres Empire walnut side chairs.Among the most important pieces of furniture offered in the auction, a Pair of French Jacob Fréres Empire Walnut Side Chairs, Paris, France, circa 1829 — with conclusive provenance dating to 1829 and the Chateau des Tuileries, 1829.

"These chairs are simply stunning on their own, as pieces of fine furniture," said Beardsley, "but figuring in the history and the unquestionable provenance, and they should prove irresistible to any number of collectors."

A Piertro Franchi(Italian, 1817-1878) marble figural group: Venus Et L'amourThe fine art section of the auction is brimming with affordable and tasteful paintings and sculpture, all offered at a variety of price points, including a stunning Pietro Franchi marble figural group, Venus Et L'Amour, Rome, Italy, circa 1876, after the original by Charles-Auguste Fraikin and Landscape with Travelers Along a Roadway, in the manner of 17th century Dutch painter Pieter Jansz Asch.

Manner of PIETER JANSZ ASCH (Dutch, 1603-1678) Landscape with Travelers Along a RoadwayContemporary and Modern Art is represented in a diversity of artists across the 20th and 21st centuries, including Andy Warhol with a color screenprint of Cow, circa 1976-77, Rukus Taxi, 1986, a playful sculpture from the inimitable American artist Red Grooms and Seeing More, 2012, from Hiwei Tu, one of China's most important and prolific living artists.

ANDY WARHOL (American, 1928-1987). Cow, circa 1976-77Several pieces of fine 20th Century Lalique punctuate the auction, with a Lalique Enameled Glass Dahlias Vase, Wingen-sur-Moder, France, circa 1923, leading the way, complemented by a Lalique Patinated Glass Espalion Vase, Wingen-sur-Moder, France, circa 1927, with a lovely blue patina.

An assortment of decorative furniture, vases, Meissen and other decorative arts round out the considerable offerings, led by an intricate and splendid Louis XVIII Style Porcelain, Gilt Bronze and Wood Tripod Table, probably made in Paris, France, circa 1850 — with bleu celeste ground Sèvres style bowl centered with portrait of Louis XVIII circled by 18 medallions, 17 depicting ladies of the court and one armorial, walnut pedestal with scroll and acanthus leaf gilt bronze mounts — and a Meissen Porcelain Figural Group from the early 20th century, depicting an aristocratic lady playing cards with three children.
