A Video Highlight Reel of the May 2012 Heritage Sports Collectibles Signature Auction

Please note this Important format change in our bidding procedures

Our longstanding clientele will know that our Signature Auctions have historically taken place over two days. Due to the volume of this event, we've added a third day. It breaks down as follows:

Day 1, Thursday May 3rd, will conclude Session One, the Trading Card section of the auction. All initial bids must be entered by 10:00 PM Central time in order to participate in the Extended Bidding portion, and each lot will close individually after thirty minutes of inactivity.

On Day 2, Friday May 4th, Session Two will begin at 11:00 AM Central time with Game Used and General Memorabilia, beginning with the incredible Seth Swirsky Collection. This is a Live Auction in our Dallas auction room, with participation available in person, by telephone, or using our Heritage Live software, which provides live streaming audio, video and bidding capabilities, opening the auction room to the entirety of the Internet.

Session Three is where you'll find the greatest change from our previous auctions. All Autographed Baseball Material will be presented in an Extended Bidding format on Friday night after the Live Auction, identical in style to the closing style of Session One. Remember, initial bids must be placed on these lots prior to 10 PM Central in order to participate in the Extended Bidding period.

Finally Session Four will close in an Extended Bidding format beginning at 10:00 PM on Saturday, May 5th. This is the "Final Session" material, typically more modestly valued offerings for the budget-conscious collector. Again, remember to place your initial bids prior to the 10 PM deadline.

Heritage Sports Consignment Trip Slated For April

With Heritage Auctions' highly-anticipated 2012 August Platinum Auction locked in for the National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore, and a newly added Signature Auction also scheduled for the same month, Heritage Auctions sports representatives will be working harder than ever to obtain quality consignments this spring season.

Collectors in the New York metropolitan area will have a chance to visit with a Heritage representative from April 21-22, by appointment, as Heritage Auctions will be setting up at the "Long Island National" in search of future auction pieces. To make an appointment or for more information, please contact Mark Jordan at MarkJ@HA.com or his direct line at (214) 409-1187, or Lee Iskowitz at LeeI@HA.com.

Sunday Internet Auction Highlights

HA.com/Sports is the place to be every Sunday night for collectors of fine sports memorabilia and trading cards.

Over 100 lots will close to initial bidding at 10 PM CT. On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding).

No other major sports memorabilia auction house provides its clientele this much bidding excitement. It's just another reason why Heritage is the World's Largest Collectibles Auctioneer.

Call or email today to discuss consigning your fine sport collectibles and trading cards to an upcoming Heritage auction.

Website Tips: Expand your collecting horizons with MyWantlist

MyWantlist is a wonderful tool for collectors. It allows you to save searches that you might perform on our website, and we will send you an email with the results whenever we have a match.

But we'd like you to consider something. Beyond the common searches for 1909-S VDB cents or Spider-man, what kind of searches do you repeatedly perform when you are not on the Heritage website? What do you look up on Google, Yahoo, or Bing? Might you find collectibles by performing — or saving — these searches at HA.com?

Here are a few examples to consider:

  • Your name. You've probably Googled yourself at some point or another; why not try the same thing in MyWantlist? Whether first name, last name, middle name, or your favorite combination thereof, there might be a match. There are no limits to the possibilities of what you might find in fields like Art and Historical auctions. And while your name is not likely to match a 1909-S VDB cent (unless your name happens to be Lincoln), occasionally we will offer tokens or medals that might interest you.

  • The name of one of your ancestors. Maybe he or she signed a National banknote, played for the Brooklyn Dodgers, or was in a silent film.

  • Your hometown. Again, there are innumerable possibilities for matches within our art and historical auctions, but have you ever considered the kind of wide-ranging possibilities that exist in currency collecting? National Bank Notes were issued in towns of all sizes from all over the country, and obsolete banknotes come from many different cities.

  • Your favorite animal. Maybe you — or a relative — collects frogs. A quick search through our archives shows a match for the word "frog" in no fewer than eight of our categories — everything except coins and sports. Yes, that includes Wine, where you can find a couple of bottles from a winery named "Frog's Leap", and Currency, where the Calaveras County Fair contributes a piece of scrip, naturally with Mark Twain's portrait.

The limits of MyWantlist are defined only by your imagination. Visit it today and give it a try!

Tyrannosaurus May Bring $1,000,000+

Tyrannosaurus bataarOne of the great dinosaurs of the Cretaceous era, an eight-foot tall, 24-foot long, 75% complete Tyrannosaurus bataar — the slightly smaller Asian counterpart to the legendary North American T-Rex — will be the centerpiece of Heritage Auctions May 20 Natural History Signature auction, taking place at Center 548 (548 W. 22nd Street, between 10th Ave. and West Street). The stupendous, impeccably preserved museum-quality specimen is expected to bring $950,000+.

"This beautiful Tyrannosaurus skeleton is one of the most complete, most spectacular specimens that we've ever seen," said David Herskowitz, Director of Natural History at Heritage Auctions. "These dinos, distant cousins of the T-Rex, were recently reclassified as Tyrannosaurids. They're incredibly rare to come across in any condition, let alone one as pristine as this."

Tyrannosaurus bataar

The Tyrannosaurus bataar roamed what is now Central Asia in the Cretaceous period, around 80 million years ago. The dino was discovered within the past decade and has been in storage in England, still in its field jackets, for the last 2-1/2 years.

"Dinosaurs of this size and scarcity almost never come to market fully prepared and fully mounted like this, making it a singular opportunity for the right collector or institution," said Herskowitz. "Consider this: Sue, the famous T-Rex that' Sotheby's sold back in 1997, was neither prepped nor mounted when she came across the auction block, ultimately realizing a price of more than $8 million."

Tyrannosaurus bataar toothIn complement to the full-sized Tyrannosaurus, Heritage will also offer a fantastic Tyrannosaurus bataar tooth with and erupting crown, arguably the finest Tyrannosaurus bataar tooth known and certainly one of the largest, measuring 10-1/2 inches long with 3-3/4 inches of enamel on both crowns, estimated at $18,000+.

ankylosaurid skullThe Tyrannosaurus bataar is not the only spectacular dino specimen offered in the auction, as evidenced by the presence of a truly fantastical ankylosaurid skull from a Cretaceous era Saichania chulsanensis, literally meaning "Beautiful one," estimated at $60,000+.

"Broader than it is long, with two sets of distinctive horn-like protrusions at the rear, it's no wonder dinosaurs like these were thought to be dragon skulls when they were discovered in ancient times," said Herskowitz. "They could grow to about 23-feet in length, roughly six feet high and around 2 tons. Standing next to this thing you can really get a sense of not just its heft, but also its dreadful beauty."

Tyrannosaurus bataar toothOther dinosaur highlights of the auction, which will also be on display in New York in May, include a very fine Cretaceous-era Troodontidae, or "Bird-Dinosaur" skeleton, 28 inches in length and 17-1/2 inches high, estimated at $45,000+, a superb "Duck-Billed" dinosaur skull from an Edmontosaurus annectens out of the Hell Creek Formation in Montana, an amazing 75-80% original and 47 inches long overall (estimate: $35,000+), a superlative American Mosasaur skull (Tylosaurus kansasensis) — a family of serpentine marine reptiles, apex predators and the scourge of the many and varied ocean-dwelling creatures with which they shared the ancient waters from the Smoky Hill Chalk, Niobrara Formation in Western Kansas, USA, estimated at $30,000+.
