Description:
1928-30 Morris "Moe" Berg Game Used Bat. Casey Stengel once called him "the strangest man ever to play baseball," and everyone else called him the smartest. A graduate of Princeton University and Columbia Law School, Berg spoke seven languages, a point which, when made to Senators outfielder Dave Harris, caused him to quip, "Yeah, I know, and he can't hit in any of them." Best remembered today as a member of the historic 1934 Baseball Tour of Japan, Berg was unquestionably that All-Star caliber team's least talented ballplayer, but arguably the Tour's most important figure. As an undercover spy for the Office of Strategic Services, the predecessor to the CIA, Berg snuck to the roof of a Tokyo hotel during the tour and filmed the city and harbor, providing the US government with crucial information for the approaching Second World War.

Presented is one of just four game used Berg bats known to exist in the hobby today. Dating to his early career as catcher for the Chicago White Sox, the signature model Hillerich & Bradsby shows evidence of heavy use, with a multitude of ball and cleat marks decorating the gorgeously patinaed hickory barrel. Evidence of removed handle tape is clearly visible at the handle. Length of thirty-five inches and weight of thirty-seven ounces are correct for Berg's ordering records, resulting in a grade of PSA/DNA GU 8. LOA from PSA/DNA.

I received the catalog and was very impressed with its color illustrations, descriptions and attractive layout. (It has better production values than the New York houses.)
