Description:
The victor's prize from Barnes' sole US Open win
1921 Jim Barnes US Open Championship Gold Medal. The Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland served as the venue for this Silver Anniversary edition of the US Open, a course in the northwest suburbs of our nation's capital close enough to the White House to bring President Warren G. Harding into the gallery for the final round, and to present this medal to British victor "Long Jim" Barnes at the conclusion. The tournament was already quite well in hand by the time President Harding arrived on the scene, as Barnes opened with a tournament-low sixty-nine and went on to lead the field wire-to-wire, finishing a staggering nine shots ahead of twin runners-up Walter Hagen and Fred McLeod. The victory would prove to be the third of Barnes' four Major Championships, and his only US Open title.

We can see the boxed medal in Barnes' left hand in a marvelous oversized (14x19") mounted original photograph of the award ceremony, the lanky Englishman about to receive a silver loving cup from President Harding as a crowd of fellow competitors and spectators sit in the grass behind them. We can identify Vice President Calvin Coolidge, Walter Hagen, Fred McLeod and Chick Evans within the group. Further back we see a gallery of players' wives and a military marching band.

The medal bears the Great Seal of the United States at obverse with raised text reporting, "United States Golf Association 1921." Verso features laurel wreath imagery at the perimeter of engraved text that reads, "Open Champion, J.M. Barnes, Columbia Country Club, July 22nd, 1921." Edge is imprinted "J.E.C. & Co., 14K." The original brown leather case is lined in green velvet and embossed with a golden maker's attribution: "J.E. Caldwell & Co., Philadelphia." Medal measures 1.75" diameter and presents flawlessly.

Also here, along with the aforementioned photograph from the award ceremony, is an original news photograph captioned on verso, "The final shot of the great match. Jim Barnes holing out on the eighteenth green for a score of 289 in seventy-two holes." The 6.5x8" photo exhibits chipping at corners but could easily be framed to mask these flaws. Letter of provenance from Barnes family.
