Description:
1951/1959/1969 Ryder Cup Captain's Ring Presented to Sam Snead. "This ring meant a lot to Dad," Jack Snead wrote to us in a note accompanying this lot. "He kept it on the front of his desk in his office at his home in Hot Springs, Virginia." It's often said by those in the upper echelons of athletic competition that the opinions of fans and of the press can be capricious and frustrating, but what truly matters are the viewpoints of one's colleagues. Earning the captaincy of the American Ryder Cup team three times is the clearest indication of the great esteem in which Snead was held by his brothers in arms, and the provided ring is the physical embodiment of that trust and admiration.

Snead led his American squad to two victories and a draw in his three terms as captain, the last perhaps the most famous Ryder Cup in history due to Jack Nicklaus' noble concession of Tony Jacklin's final putt that is rightfully considered one of the greatest shows of sportsmanship ever witnessed in international competition. It was at some time after that 1969 edition that the provided ring was presented to Snead, an elegant keepsake featuring a real diamond set into a blue stone on the face at center of raised text announcing, "Ryder Cup Captain." Left shank holds an image of the American flag and the engraved dates of Snead's captaincy. Right shank is engraved "S. Snead" above an image of a miniature Ryder Cup. Interior band is stamped "14K" and measures to a size nine and a half. Fine condition. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
