Description:
Rare official Championship prize for the "Miracle Braves" back-up catcher
1914 Boston Braves World Championship Pin Presented to Bert Whaling. Exquisite and exceedingly rare pin celebrates the team responsible for one of the most improbable comebacks in the game's long history. Ten games below .500 at the midpoint of the season, the Braves stormed back in the second half to win sixty-one of the final seventy-seven to take the pennant by a landslide. A four-game sweep of the all but invincible Philadelphia Athletics in October accounts for the creation of this official victor's prize, an elegant threaded-post pin featuring a laurel wreath design and the words "World's Champions 1914" surrounding a genuine diamond nucleus. Reverse retains its original threaded post and golden (stamped "14K") nut, and is engraved in tiny block lettering "Bert Whaling." Stamped opposite are "14K" and the maker's mark "F.H. Co.," creators of several period Championship awards including the 1910 Chicago Cubs and 1919 Cincinnati Reds models.

Though Whaling served as a back-up to starting catcher Hank Gowdy during the team's improbable climb from the basement to the attic of the National League, his defense earned him sixty games of action, during which time he led all Senior Circuiit catchers with a 54.5% caught stealing percentage. The previous season he had become the first rookie catcher in history to win a fielding title.

Our records indicate that this is just the third such Championship prize to surface in the modern hobby, but it's worthy of note that the other two were fashioned into rings, leaving this as the sole survivor in its original as-issued format. As the only unaltered Championship award from one of the most famous teams in the history of the professional game, this piece is a "miracle" itself, and a cornerstone for even the finest of private baseball jewelry collections. Fine condition.
