Description:
The only known example of the style?
1927-28 Garland Buckeye Game Worn Cleveland Indians Uniform. When your surname is "Buckeye," you'd better play in Ohio! The hefty southpaw hurler is best remembered today as the two-time home run victim of Babe Ruth on June 11, 1927, a display of power that inspired Indians catcher Luke Sewell to demand that the umpire inspect the Babe's bat before his next plate appearance. Presented is a gorgeous and stupendously rare home white flannel uniform worn by Buckeye during that exciting era of American League baseball, though details of the style's utility are admittedly sketchy. Mark Okkonen's definitive uniform guide lists this format, featuring a glorious chenille Indian's head patch over the heart, as the Indian's home model for 1928, but embroidery at lower rear exterior tail suggests that the jersey was first debuted late in the Babe's finest season, reading "Buckeye 2 27."

Regardless of the precise range of use, this is a style that has never before surfaced on the hobby's major auction block, and should any other representation survive, this is undoubtedly the finer example. The condition is as extraordinary as the design, with a missing secondary tag beneath the "Spalding" logo label inside the collar the only noteworthy misstep. Our catalog imagery should indicate that no defects are apparent at anything short of an inch-by-inch examination of the jersey's fabric. An unusual punch-coded label is sewn to front right hem, apparently a decades-later dry cleaning tag which could easily be removed if desired.

Enormous matching pants are here as well, the forty-four inch waist proper for Buckeye's six-foot, 255 pound frame. His surname is again embroidered on the garment, at fly button path, and a scattering of rust staining is due to oxidation of the metal clasp at the top of the fly. This staining is confined almost entirely to the rear of the pants, however, leaving the front almost as clean as the jersey it accompanies. "Spalding" label appears at interior waistband.
