Description:
1929-30 St. Louis Browns Game Worn Jersey. Tremendously rare grey flannel jersey is the first of this style we've ever encountered. We've been able to narrow the vintage to a two-season span by virtue of the lettering style on the chest that debuted in 1929 and the absence of a number (or stitching pattern thereof) on verso. The team adopted jersey digits for the 1931 season. We assume that the player attribution was once handwritten on the "Rawlings St. Louis" collar tag, but time has erased any notations, leaving original ownership an enduring mystery. The garment remains in splendid condition otherwise, with the two-tone felt "St. Louis" arching gently across a chest missing two of the original buttons. An inconsequential half inch tear on verso is mentioned only in the interest of full disclosure, and there are no other distractions, a rarity for uniforms of this period typically plagued by staining and moth holes. Almost certainly the finest surviving example of this style that once saw action at Fenway and the House that Ruth Built. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
