Description:
1912 Grand Opening of Fenway Park Ticket Stub. Just five days after the RMS Titanic collided with an iceberg and fell two and a half miles beneath the frigid surface of the North Atlantic, a decidely more joyous occasion was celebrated in the City of Boston on an oddly shaped parcel of land bordered by Brookline Avenue, Jersey Street, Van Ness Street and Lansdowne Street. Mayor John F. Fitzgerald, grandfather of future President John F. Kennedy, threw out the first pitch before the battle between the Red Sox and their rivals the New York Highlanders (renamed the Yankees the following season) was begun, another key moment in the game's most storied rivalry.

The 24,000 spectators on hand were treated to some bonus baseball this day, as the two clubs found themselves deadlocked at six at the close of nine innings of play, but the final blow was struck in the bottom of the eleventh as Hall of Famer Tris Speaker singled past short to bring Steve Yerkes in from third for the walk-off victory. And thus began the Sox' second World Championship season, and the illustrious history of Fenway Park.

Our auction results database of all major events in the twenty-first century finds not a single example of this exceedingly rare stub, and it's simply a factor of blind luck or divine providence that it would surface during the fabled ballpark's centennial. The modest pink slab of history makes no great show of its relevance, simply announcing the date of "Apl 20, 1912" as if it were any other day of the season. Thankfully the original owner saw fit to save the relic for posterity, and black scrapbook paper affixed to verso indicates the key to its survival. The obverse shows a modest degree of handling wear but presents without any noteworthy distraction. The stub is encapsulated as "Authentic" by PSA.
