Description:
1968 Bobby Jones Signed Print of 1930 Victory at St. Andrews. He captured the heart of the British empire in 1927 when he humbly asked that his Open Championship trophy remain in its home country for safe keeping, and the fans at St. Andrews cheered him as their own when he sank the winning put in the 1930 British Amateur, the first victory in his historic Grand Slam. "Hats filled the air," wrote author Mark Frost of the scene. "The crowd swallowed him, a full mile from the clubhouse...For a brief moment they lifted their hero up on their shoulders...they apparently wanted to take the new champion apart to see what made him tick." One of the most celebrated moments of Jones' career is captured in this majestic print (image size 17x21"), the first we've seen autographed by the victor, who inscribed the work, "For Sadler Hayes, Best wishes, Bob Jones." By this point in his life, Jones was enfeebled by the painful spinal cord disease that would ultimately claim his life in three years' time, but his ink is quite bold if a bit shaky. The print is affixed to a cardboard backing and matted with a cut out to display the autograph, but the print is complete and undamaged but for very minor wear and a few pencil markings in the lower margin which are hidden by the mat. Full dimensions of mat are 26x29". The largest and most impressive signed image of Jones we've ever handled. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Pre-Certified by PSA/DNA.
