Description:
1916 M101-5 Blank Back Babe Ruth Rookie #151 SGC 60 EX 5! Babe Ruth is unquestionably the greatest star ever produced by our National Pastime. His humble beginnings from an orphanage in a poor section of Baltimore, Maryland to the absolute pinnacle of wealth and international fame is the very essence of the American dream and proof of the opportunity this country can provide. Yes, his "Ruthian" appetites for wine, women, food and song manifested into the round belly and big, smiling face that made him so endearing to children and adults alike. He was a man of monumental celebrity and yet his entire persona is completely embodied in one flippant nickname, "The Babe." Only the tales found within Greek mythology can compare and those were about the gods. Certainly Ruth wasn't a god, but he was a titan of his day. The way he twirled his cap as he trotted around the bases on those surprisingly skinny legs after another tremendous home run blast, the ever-lasting grin that made life-long fans of both men and women alike be they of the salt of the earth or royalty. During World War II, along with a barrage of bullets and bombs, yells of "To hell with Babe Ruth!" was the greatest insult to an American that Japanese forces could conceive. Babe Ruth was the embodiment, the personification, of America. During his career, Babe Ruth appeared in just about every trading card promotion made available. If Ruth wasn't in it, why bother collecting it? Today, from the dozens of choices the one card that has the most magnetic pull on the senses is of course his first card... his rookie card. The first card Ruth appeared on is card #151 from the M101-5 series from 1916, just two seasons into his legendary rise to baseball immortality. When issued, Ruth was a fit and lean pitcher just coming into his own. The year this card appeared would be Ruth's best season from the mound posting a 23-12 record (9 shutouts) with a 1.75 ERA. He only hit three home runs that season.

The card has been graded SGC 60 EX 5. To date, nine cards have been submitted to SGC and this is the second highest graded card of the group. The highest is only a mere half-grade higher. Corners have light wear at the tips and the blank reverse shows no toning. There are no creases, wrinkles or any surface loss, not even a tiny speck. It is the quintessential middle grade example of what can be called the most desired card within the hobby.
