Description:
"He was the greatest fighter I ever saw on a baseball field. The game was never over with Youngs until the last man was out."

--John McGraw
1920's Ross Youngs Signed Blank Card. We were tempted to call it a signed index card, but at 3.5x5.5" the dimensions weren't quite right, and the embossed "frame" of the piece likewise defies that characterization, suggesting this may have been a part of some more formal display at one time. We make no hesitation, however, in declaring this flawlessly rendered black fountain pen signature one of the most exciting autograph offerings to hit the public auction block in 2012.

Born in Shiner, Texas, Youngs was just seventeen years old when he made his professional debut with the Austin Senators of the Texas League in 1914, ultimately working his way into the Majors with a late-season start for the 1917 New York Giants. He would call the Polo Grounds home for the entirety of his Major League career, one tragically cut short by a diagnosis of a serious kidney disorder known today as Bright's Disease. Just over a year past his final appearance in a two to nothing victory over the Chicago Cubs, Youngs succumbed to his illness at age thirty.

Coming just two years after the loss of fellow New York legend Christy Mathewson, Youngs' death hit the Giants faithful hard, and a plaque was quickly commissioned and hung in the Polo Grounds outfield in memoriam. And while Matty's early death has left the modern hobby with a woefully insufficient supply of autographs, most collectors have lost hope and removed Youngs from their wish lists entirely, understanding that only a tiny handful of genuine exemplars exist.

Here we present the finest we've yet encountered, a 9+/10 black fountain pen representation free of the slightest suggestion of its many decades of life. Discounting his appearance on rare 1920's Giants team balls, just a single example of Youngs' autograph has appeared on a major auction block this century, so "now or never" is a legitimate consideration. LOA from Kevin Keating.
