Description:
Autographed less than a month before his tragic death.
1979 Thurman Munson Single Signed Baseball Given to Teammate Tommy John. He was the first official captain of the New York Yankees since the great Lou Gehrig, but, tragically, that would not be the end of their shared legacy. This Platinum Night auction marks the thirty-third anniversary of Munson's sudden and shocking passing. For a generation of Yankees fans, the date will stick with them always, and that feeling of despair that stood in such stark contrast to what had otherwise been a joyous age in the Bronx punctuated by back-to-back World Championships.

Star pitcher Tommy John had been on the opposing emotional end of those late 1970's World Series, a top ace for the National League Champion Los Angeles Dodgers. But now he was with the Yanks, pitching the finest ball of his career--he'd place second in the 1979 Cy Young voting, just ahead of fellow rotation-mate Ron Guidry. Whether it had been a feeling of gratitude for Munson's part in that success, or some vague premonition of the tragedy to come, John fished a game ball out of the bag as he sat beside Munson in the dugout in July of 1979 and asked for an autograph, which was duly granted in 9/10 blue ballpoint ink on the sweet spot.

The OAL (MacPhail) ball is modestly toned from use and age but otherwise presents flawlessly. It's historical positioning and flawless provenance establish it as one of the most desirable Munson singles on earth. Letter of provenance from Tommy John. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
