Description:
1969-70 Topps Basketball Counter Display Wax Box With 24 High Graded Unopened Packs! If any basketball card set can match the significance and importance that the 1952 Topps issue holds for baseball, it is the 99-card Topps series that burst forth from wax packs in 1969. When first circulated, this landmark edition stood tall as the most comprehensive promotion to showcase the cast of basketball revolutionaries quite literally redefining James Naismith's creation. As young card-collecting basketball fans had close to nothing to pursue for eight years, the arrival of the issue was long overdue and met with enormous enthusiasm. But somehow the contents of this lot were spared a meeting with the enthusiastic fingers of a young fan, the hardcourt heroes of the LBJ era still entombed in the original wax. The 5 x 8 x 2-3/8' counter-display box that contains them has been graded GAI NM+ 7.5.

The mild signs of handling are the only indication within this stunning presentation to hint that more than four decades years have passed since issue. Each of the 10-cent wax paper packs still plays host to 10 possibly mint cards and one paper 'Rulers' insert. The card size, what we now called the 'Tall Boy' format, was a natural choice for the first basketball set to carry the Topps name in 12 years. Unopened wax packs from this series are about as rare as they come for basketball enthusiasts, tremendously rare in any condition. There were no dealers back in these days hoarding away multiple boxes or cases for future sale. Here we offer twenty-four high-grade packs including twenty that claim 'Mint' to 'Perfect' status! The contents may include Mint condition card of HoFers Lew Alcindor (#25, his rookie), Wilt Chamberlain (#1), John Havlicek (#20, rookie), Elgin Baylor (#35), Bill Bradley (#43, rookie), Oscar Robertson (#50), Earl Monroe (#80, rookie), Dave DeBusschere (#85, rookie), Jerry West (#90) and of course the condition critical card #99 Checklist that brings to a close this important release. The packs grade the following: GAI Perfect 10: 6 packs; GAI Gem Mint 9.5: 7 packs; GAI Mint 9: 7 packs; GAI NM-MT+ 8.5: 1 pack; GAI NM-MT 8: 2 packs; GAI NM+ 7.5: 1 pack. A virtually unhandled and rather impossible offering to match. Please see our online listings, affording an examination of the roster of superstars visible on the top and bottom of the packs.
