Description:
1937 Bing Crosby 1-Wood Shillelagh and Photos Lot of Three. The extraordinary crooner Bing Crosby was an avid golfer as well and this unique "Shillelagh" 1-Wood was owned by Crosby and possibly used as a promotional piece at the first National Pro Am Golf Championship, dubbed "The Crosby Clambake" in 1937 at Rancho Sante Fe, Calif. This ersatz "driver" is 46 inches from stem to stern, with a shaft that earns the "shillelagh" designation and a comically oversized wood club face that is roughly 9 inches wide and 7 inches deep. The resulting driver is a hilariously heavy and ultimately unwieldy "driver" that must have drawn laughs from Bing's entourage. A two-handicapper, Crosby and Bob Hope were named Bob Jones Award winners for their contributions to the sport and both legendary entertainers are members of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Included with the lot are two 8-by-10 publicity stills: one shows Hope with the "driver" slung over his shoulder like a baseball bat and a second image shows both Crosby and Hope mugging for the cameraman, with Bing holding his shillelagh driver and Hope lining up a shot with a pitching wedge.
