Description:
Circa 1899 Haskell Golf Ball. A very rare example of the ball that changed the world of golf. Prior to the introduction of the Haskell ball, everyone used a golf ball made of gutta percha which was a form of rubber imported from the East Indies. At that time the Goodrich Rubber Company was making gutta percha balls, but was not a major force. In 1899 an enterprising employee named Coburn Haskell decided to wind rubber bands around a solid rubber core and cover it with gutta percha. It was found that the ball traveled thirty yards farther than the gutty so Goodrich patented the idea and started marketing the ball. The initial run of Haskell balls were not very durable because the cover was brittle. They were soon replaced by better versions. This example is one of the initial Haskell balls of which only about 15 survive. This lot is the very ball pictured on page thirty-three of Olman's 1985 seminal guide, "The Encyclopedia of Golf Collectibles." One side of the ball reads "HASKELL" and the other side reads "Pat. Apr. 11, 1899." The cover shows a distinct crack, otherwise the ball is in very good condition. The wound rubber ball dominated the game for one hundred years.
