Description:
1925 Walter Hagen PGA Championship Gold Medal. Walter Hagen was the outstanding golfer of his era and won a total of 11 major championships, comprising the US Open in 1914 & 1919, the British Open Championship in 1922, 1924, 1928 & 1929 and the US PGA Championship in 1921, 1924, 1925, 1926 and in 1927. Only Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods have surpassed Hagen's record in majors.

This 1925 PGA gold winners medal was left as collateral for a liquor bill in Palm Springs, California and was never reclaimed (a letter describing the circumstances from Fred Coops & Co./Collector Gallery accompanies this lot.) The tournament was played at Olympia Field Country Club. In the first round defending champion Walter Hagen dispatched low qualifier Al Watrous in a playoff on hole number thirty-nine. In the next match Hagen easily beat Mike Brady 7 & 6. The quarter final had Haig rallying to beat Leo Diegel on the fourth overtime hole. Hagen easily beat Harry Cooper 3 & 1 in the semifinal and in the final round The Haig beat Wild Bill Melhorn 6 & 5 on the thirty-first hole.

The medal is engraved "Professional Golfers Association of America" with Walter Hagen's name and 1925 date with set diamond on the front. The back has engraving depicting a mythical man swinging a golf club with another figure carrying a flag. Medal measure 2" in diameter and weighs 125 grams.
