Description:
1953 Carl "Bobo" Olson World Middleweight Championship "Ring Magazine" Belt. Magnificent relic is as good as it gets for the boxing world, the definitive artifact of pugilistic accomplishment. This is the one and only Championship belt awarded to 2000 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee Bobo Olson for his defeat of Randy Turpin on October 21, 1953 to assume Sugar Ray Robinson's vacated World Middleweight Championship. Despite a slow start in this Madison Square Garden title bout, Olson put the heart and granite chin that made him a fan favorite to good use, slowly turning the tide on contender Randy Turpin and knocking him to the canvas twice to realize a unanimous fifteen round decision.

Championship belts rarely are made available to the collecting public and early "Ring Magazine" examples such as this are particularly coveted for their scarcity and enormous aesthetic appeal. The design is punctuated by a large center plaque upon which a figural eagle perches. The enameled text below announces, "The Ring Magazine Award, Won By Carl "Bobo" Olson, Madison Square Garden, New York City." Smaller plaques clutching the red, white, blue and yellow belt at either side read "World Middleweight Championship Oct. 21-1953" and "Defeated Randy Turpin in 15 Rounds" respectively. The fabric portion of the belt exhibits the mild toning one would expect of decades-old textiles but the metal plates exhibit nothing more than very mild oxidation to suggest their advanced age. A truly magnificent relic from what is arguably the greatest era of Middleweight boxing history. Consigned by the Olson family. Letter of provenance from Olson's widow.
