Description:
1936 Benny Frey Game Worn Cincinnati Reds Jersey with Pants. Extraordinarily rare jersey style is the first we've ever encountered in the collecting hobby, utilized just two seasons by the Cincinnati Reds franchise (1936-37). This particular example was issued to and worn by the troubled pitcher Benny Frey, who would take his own life the year after he wore the shirt when an arm injury left him relegated to the minors. The jersey is constructed from an unusual rather coarse fiber, lighter than the typical flannel uniforms of the day. A chenille scripted "Reds" stands above the heart, with a red felt number "22" applied to verso. Embroidered directly into lower left front tail is "Frey 1936." Interior collar holds manufacturer's tagging, reading "Goldsmith Sports Equipment, Cincinnati, Ohio" and "Palm Beach." One button is missing from the front and some staining on left sleeve must be noted, but the jersey is otherwise very attractive, shows solid wear and presents very well. The matching pants lack manufacturer's tagging but are embroidered "Weaver '38" at interior waistband, surely a reference to 1938 Reds pitcher Jim Weaver. The uniform was apparently a hand-me-down to Severeid, who was coaching in the late 1930's in the Texas League and from whose estate the uniform derives. An ancient tag with a handwritten attribution to Severeid remains attached to the jersey front. LOA from Heritage Auctions.

The Hank Severeid Collection.

This is one of nine lots deriving from the personal collection of Henry "Hank" Severeid, whose baseball career began as a twenty-year old catcher for the 1911 Cincinnati Reds and ended only with his sudden passing while working as a scout for the 1968 Boston Red Sox. A member of the 1925 Senators and 1926 Yankees American League Championship teams, Severeid dedicated over half a century of his life to our National Pastime, and Heritage is pleased to present the following selection of artifacts from his journey. All lots are consigned directly by the Severeid family.
