Description:
1908 World Series Program (Chicago). Just the second example of this monumentally scarce program we've ever handled, the first having realized a final price of $41,825 in our April 2009 Signature Auction. While that was, admittedly, an impressive result, it's hardly inexplicable. Remember, this is the last Chicago Cubs World Series victory, and the franchise has picked up quite a few fans over the past century of Championship drought. One would estimate that no more than a dozen surviving examples are available to tempt those legions of fans.

Appreciating considerably from its original ten cent price tag, this sixteen-page relic is a masterpiece of Dead Ball Era design, with marvelous photographic portraits of legends like Tinker, Evers and Three Finger Brown nestled within. The center scorecard is unused, the original owner perhaps too dazzled by the visiting tandem of Ty Cobb and Wahoo Sam Crawford to work a pencil. Only light handling wear is evident, with some toning of the cover, a half inch tear at bottom edge and a light bend just left of center being the most noteworthy issues. The program remains tightly bound and very structurally sound, certainly far superior in condition to the vast majority of softcover publications past their centennial. Here it serves as half of what we believe to be the only pair of 1908 World Series programs to be offered together within a single auction since the famous 1999 Halper sale. The Detroit version follows this lot.
