Description:
1872 Boston Red Stockings CDV Fraley Rogers SGC Authentic - From the George Wright Collection. Fraley Rogers was one of baseball's earliest tragic figures. His career lasted for only two seasons-1872 and 1873, in which he played in 46 games (all but one in 1872). Thankfully his participation with the 1872 World's Champion Boston Red Stockings team merited taking this formal portrait of the young right fielder. Rogers became a victim of his inner demons when he committed suicide in 1881 when he was approx. 30 years old. An exact date of birth is unknown. It is quite possible this is the only image of Rogers available to 19th century enthusiasts. This cabinet card comes from the personal collection of George Wright, at one time serving as part of a display which imaged 11 members of the Red Stockings team. The image of Rogers in formal attire has one brief crease, one surface scratch, a stain in the upper right. Slight toning has made visible the oval shape which was the open area visible through the matte board. The upper right corner was purposely clipped to accommodate the preceding player cabinet card. Corner clip aside, the photo shows sharp detail and a full range of values. The reverse displays roughness from said mounting. It is also worth noting the image was taken by the renowned Warren Studios of Boston, Mass. Encapsulated as "Authentic" by SGC, with note to its special provenance.
