Description:
19th Century Tintype Photo of Baseball Player Catching Ball. During the later decades of the 19th century photography was still a relatively new medium with new processes were still being developed, no pun intended. The tintype, or ferrotype is a photo were the image appears on the front of a piece of iron metal with a black lacquer finish or emulsion. The image is of a baseball player in a bib front style jersey with a large "H" about to catch a ball. The surface/edges have wear and the corners have been artificially rounded. Tape adhesive and minor remnants are found around the outer border areas of the reverse. There is some bending to the metal and portions of the image have darkened due to over exposure but this is a rare chance to own a piece of early baseball memorabilia. The bib front style was used from the 1860's into the 1880's.
