Jill Burgum, Senior Director of Fine Jewelry for Heritage Auctions, brings a wealth of jewelry expertise to the company.

A graduate of University of Hawaii at Manoa, Ms. Burgum received her B.A. in Art History. After completing her degree, she attended Bowman Tech and Stewart's International, both for training in jewelry manufacturing and repair, then the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, California, where she completed degrees in both Graduate Gemology and Jewelry Design in 1994.

Ms. Burgum began her working career as an on-call preview worker for Sotheby's Beverly Hills, California. She then moved to San Francisco as a jewelry cataloguer for Butterfield & Butterfield Auctions in 1996, transferring to their Los Angeles Jewelry department in 1997 as lead specialist, which she eventually left to build two jewelry web sites for start-up companies. She has also worked in retail jewelry sales and owned her own independent jewelry appraisal business.

She has been a contributor to Art + Auction, Brilliant, Eclat, Modern Jeweler, MSN Money, and Rapaport magazines.

Ms. Burgum has been a guest lecturer for the Los Angeles Natural History Museum, Gem & Mineral Council, and appeared as a specialist on HGTV, KTLA, CNN, FOX Business and ANTIQUES ROADSHOW.

Jim Wolf began his horological career in 1980 as an apprentice watchmaker and cataloger for Ashland Investments. He quickly became a key executive in charge of sales and acquisitions and developed an industry leading catalog series presenting fine antique pocket watches, vintage wristwatches and estate jewelry. As a dealer and advisor to watch collectors worldwide, Jim has provided expert consultation concerning values, authenticity, and investment potential. Jim is also highly respected by collectors for his through knowledge of the historical, technical and aesthetic aspects of watches. Mr. Wolf has been a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors since 1982 and a long standing consultant to the authors of the "Complete Price Guide to Watches." Jim has written numerous articles for watch and jewelry publications including HR magazine, the NAWCC bulletin and the Market Resource Guide. He is also the co-author of "The Complete Guide to Antique Jewelry." In the late 1970's Mr. Wolf majored in classical guitar at the State University of New York and went on to a concert career as member of the Buffalo Guitar Quartet with appearances at Carnegie Hall and many major concert venues in the United States and Canada. In the 1990's, Jim played second chair cello as a volunteer with the Sarasota Pops Orchestra. Jim and his wife Julie enjoy musical and cultural events and spirited golf matches in their spare time.

Jessica DuBroc graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2003. Her initial interest in the jewelry business was sparked at an early age. Her great-grandfather was a diamond cutter and her grandfather owned a wholesale jewelry company for over 25 years. She has worked in wholesale, retail, consignment and auction venues for the past eight years. Jessica is a candidate for membership in the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA), and has attended the past four conferences in Miami, Pittsburgh, Seattle and Cleveland. She is currently working towards her Graduate Gemologist degree through the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

Michael Fossner is a Consignment Director for Timepieces at Heritage’s New York office. Michael is a Graduate Gemologist and an Accredited Jewelry Professional and the fifth-generation of a family in the watch business. Growing up, Michael learned the trade in his father’s business, New York’s J & P Timepieces, while attending trade shows with his family. He eventually became the company’s website and sales manager, focusing on ecommerce sales of high-end timepieces. Michael also has degrees in International Business and Marketing from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland in College Park.  Following his studies, he served six months as an apprentice for a watch dealer in Switzerland.

Peggy Gottlieb is a well known specialist in the field of gems and jewelry. After graduating from the Gemological Institute of America with a Graduate Gemologist degree, she worked as a staff gemologist for the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory. In 1991, she started her own business with emphasis on antique and estate jewelry. In 1998, she became Vice-President, Director of Jewelry, for Sotheby’s Los Angeles, under the tutelage of John Block.  In 2002, she left Sotheby’s to begin Bluegrass Jewels, again specializing in antique and estate jewelry. After a successful career in the antique and estate jewelry business, she was asked by Heritage Auctions to be their jewelry specialist in Beverly Hills.

 

Ms. Gottlieb has lectured extensively on the subject of gems and jewelry. She has acted as a consultant to the Smithsonian Institution Hall of Gems and Minerals, in Washington, D.C., as well as bank trust departments, trust and estate attorneys, and private individuals. Ms. Gottlieb is qualified in the State of California to act as an expert witness, Civil and County Courts and in United States Federal Court.

Karen Sampieri, a New York native, began her career at the Gemological Institute of America as a resident student, following her undergrad studies in Social Science at Hofstra. The move was a coupling of her love of science with her passion for art, inspired in part by her father, a diamond setter and independent diamond dealer. In 1995, Karen joined Christie’s and, within two years, was promoted to head cataloguer for Christie’s Park Avenue. There she was responsible for cataloguing all Fine and Magnificent auctions, which contained some of the world’s finest jewelry and rarest of gemstones. In 1999, Karen accepted a position at Tiffany & Company, where she stayed for 13 years, rising to Senior Colored Gemstone Buyer. She has traveled the world procuring some of the world’s most sought-after colored stones and is regarded as a top expert in colored gemstones.

 

Now, as Director of Jewelry for Heritage Auctions’ New York office, Karen oversees the day-to-day jewelry operations of the company’s East Coast branch. She has served as Director of Education, Co-President, Past Co-President Director of Membership and remains an Advisor for the Women’s Jewelry Association, Metro Chapter. She is a GIA Alumni member and sits on the school’s Program Advisory Committee. Karen is a member of the American Society of Jewelry Historians as well as the New York Jewelers Club.
